Cildo Meireles (s. 1948) on brasilialainen käsitteellinen taiteilija, installaatiotaiteilija ja kuvanveistäjä, jonka eräs mielenkiintoinen teos on vuodelta 2001 nimeltä Baabel. Teos on tornin muotoon koottu radiolaitteiden kokoelma. Kun jokainen sadoista radiolaitteista on viritetty erikielisille asemille, voimme vain kuvitella siitä syntyvää suunnatonta kielten ja äänten kakofoniaa.
Cildo Meireles (b. 1948) is a Brazilian conceptual artist, installation artist and sculptor, whose one interesting work is from 2001 called Babel. The work is a collection of radio equipment assembled in the shape of a tower. When each of the hundreds of radios is tuned to stations in different languages, we can only imagine the endless cacophony of languages and voices that results.
Puuttumatta sen enempää taitelija Meirelesin taiteelliseen viestiin mietin, syntyikö Sinearin maassa noin 100 vuotta vedenpaisumuksen jälkeen (1656 + 100 = 1756 jälkeen luomisen) vastaava kielten metakka, kun Jahve joukkoineen tuli säikäyttämään ja lopettamaan ihmisten yhteisen hankkeen rakentaa taivaisiin yltävä torni ja luoda itselleen nimi/maine, joka liittäisi heidät yhteen, etteivät he hajaantuisi yli koko maan.
Without interfering further with the artistic message of the artist Meireles, I wondered if a similar language mess arose in the land of Shinar about 100 years after the Flood (1656 + 100 = 1756 after creation), when Yahweh and his troops came to frighten and stop the common project of people to build a tower reaching to the heavens and create a name/fame for themselves, which would bind them together so that they would not be scattered over the whole earth.
Baabelin torni liitetään kielten sekoittamiseen, ja sekoittajaksi mainitaan usein ”Jumala". Mutta mikä jumala on kysymyksessä? Yhdeksän jaetta käsittävässä lyhyessä kertomuksessa esiintyy vain tetragrammi, יהוה, viisi kertaa eikä mitään muuta jumaluuteen viittaavaa nimeä. Kysymyksessä on siis Jahve.
The Tower of Babel is associated with the mixing of languages, and often ”God" is mentioned as the mixer. But what god is in question? In the short narrative of nine verses, only the Tetragrammaton, יהוה, appears five times and no other name referring to the deity. So it is Yahweh.
Mutta Jahvea ei kannata sekoittaa taivaalliseen Isäämme, sillä Hän antoi meille selkeän Sanan Pojassaan, Jeshuassa!
But Yahweh should not be confused with our heavenly Father, because He gave us a clear Word in His Son, Yeshua!
Kertomuksessa Baabelin tornista on muutamia seikkoja, jotka todistavat sen puolesta, että ihmisten hankkeisiin puuttunut Jahve ei voi mitenkään olla Jeshuan Isä.
In the story about the tower of Babel, there are a few things that testify in favour of the fact that Yahweh, who intervened in the projects of people, cannot possibly be Yeshua's Father.
👉 Jos ihmisten aikaansaaman tornin huippu uhkasi jo Jahvea, hänen valtaistumensa ei voi olla kovin korkealla. Isä-Jumalan asuinsijoihin ei olla ylletty edes nykyisillä avaruuslaitteilla.
If the top of the man-made tower already threatened Yahweh, his throne cannot be very high. Father God's abode has not been reached even with current space equipment.
👉 Jahven piti tulla alas katsomaan tornia. Hän ei voi olla siten Kaikkivaltias Jumala, joka tuntee ihmisen salatuimmat ajatuksetkin.
Yahweh had to come down to see the tower. He cannot therefore be the Almighty God who knows even the most secret thoughts of man.
👉 Ihmisten yhtenäisyys ja yhteistyö muodosti Jahvelle selvän uhkan, ja hän pelkäsi heidän seuraavia hankkeitaan. Todellinen universumin Luoja (Isä ja Poika) ei pelkää luomiaan ihmisiä, sillä Hän itse antoi heille kaikki kyvyt ja lahjakkuudet!
The unity and cooperation of the people constituted a clear threat to Yahweh, and he feared their next ventures. The real Creator of the universe (Father and Son) is not afraid of the people He created, because He Himself gave them all the abilities and talents!
👉 Kertomuksessa jätetään mainitsematta se, keitä Jahve kutsui astumaan kanssaan alas ihmisten luo. Taivaallisten joukkojen lisäksi tässä maailmassa on vain pimeyden joukkoja, joita ei tietenkään kannata mainita ja paljastaa silloin, kun Jahve yrittää teeskennellä olevansa valkeuden Jumala.
The account does not mention who Yahweh called to come down with him to the people. Besides the heavenly forces, there are only forces of darkness in this world, which of course should not be mentioned and exposed when Yahweh tries to pretend to be the God of light.
👉 Sana, joka jakeessa 1. Moos. 11: 7 on käännetty suomeksi sanalla ”sekoittamaan” on hepreaksi נבלה (navla), eikä se merkitse ”sekoittaa”, joka on hepreaksi לערבב (le-arbev).
The word that in Genesis 11:7 is translated into Finnish as "to mix" is in Hebrew נבלה (navla), and it does not mean "to mix", which is לארבב (le-arbev) in Hebrew.
Sana navla on Nifal-muodossa ja viittaa monikolliseen tekemiseen. Mutta minkälaiseen tekemiseen? Kun Nifalin tunnus poistetaan, jäljelle jää kolmikirjaiminen verbi, בלה, jonka merkityksiä ovat ”pelästyttää” ja ”kuluttaa”.
The word navla is in the Nifal form and refers to making multiple. But for what kind of work? When the sign of Nifal is removed, what remains is the three-letter verb, בלה, which means "to scare" and "to consume".
👉 Jahven apuun kutsumat joukot siis pelästyttivät/säikäyttivät/hämmensivät torninrakentajat niin, että he jättivät rakentamisen kesken ja pakenivat kukin eri suuntiin. Käytännössä tapahtui juuri se, mitä ihmiset olivat yrittäneet välttää. Kansan hajaantuminen merkitsi yhteisen kielen unohtumista... ”kuluttamista”... ja vähitellen uusien kielten syntymistä.
So the forces called by Yahweh to help scared/startled/confused the tower builders so that they left the building unfinished and fled in different directions. In practice, exactly what people had tried to avoid happened. The dispersal of the people meant the forgetting of the common language... ”consuming”... and gradually the birth of new languages.
Uusien kielten kehittyminen jatkuu vielä nykyäänkin, ja jokainen uusi kieli on opeteltava alusta alkaen, jotta sitä voisi ymmärtää.
The development of new languages continues even today, and each new language has to be learned in order to understand it.
👉 1. Moos. 11: 8: ssa todetaan, että ”Jahve hajotti heidät sieltä yli kaiken maan, niin että he lakkasivat kaupunkia rakentamasta”. Juuri tämä oli se, mitä Baalelissa todella tapahtui. Ja kielten sekoittuminen (uusien syntyminen) oli sen seurausta. Eihän yhtä kieltä voida edes sekoittaa!
Genesis 11:8 states that "Yahweh scattered them from there over all the land, so that they stopped building the city". This is exactly what happened in Babel. And the mixing of languages (the creation of new ones) was the result. You can't even mix one language!
👉 Baabeliin saakka oli siis vain yksi puhekieli, ja se todetaan 11: 1:ssa kahteen kertaan. Mutta tuo jae voidaan kääntää myös näin: koko maassa oli yksi puhekieli (שפה אחת sapa echat) ja muutama mielipide /joitakin käskyjä (דברים אחדים devarim echarim).
So until Babylon there was only one spoken language, and it is stated twice in 11:1. But that verse can also be translated like this: the whole earth had one language (שפה אחת sapa echat) and a few opinions / some commandments (דברים אחדים devarim echarim).
Jakeen alussa on yksikkö ja lopussa monikko, joten jakeen lopussa ei voida puhua enää yhdestä kielestä/puheenparresta. Monikollisen devarim sanan yksikkömuoto on דבר davar, joka merkitsee: sana, neuvo, ajatus, mielipide, käsky, määräys, säädös, puhe, huhu, asia, kertomus, tapaus, tehtävä, urakka.
The beginning of the verse is singular and the end is plural, so at the end of the verse it is not possible to talk about one language/phrase. The singular form of the plural word devarim is דבר davar, which means: word, advice, thought, opinion, order, regulation, decree, speech, rumor, thing, report, incident, task, chore.
👉 On ilmiselvää, että suuressa ihmisjoukossa on monia mielipiteitä, ajatuksia ja käsityksiä siitä, miten jokin (torni) pitäisi rakentaa. Ja on varsin luultavaa, että ihmisten suuressa yhteishankkeessa Sinearin maassa oli jo alusta alkaen riitaa ja erimielisyyttä.
It is obvious that a large group of people have many opinions, thoughts and ideas about how something (a tower) should be built. And it is quite probable that in the great joint project of the people in the land of Shinar there was strife and disagreement from the very beginning.
👉 Sitten Jahven joukot pelästyttivät ihmiset hajaantumaan eri suuntiin, ja keskinäiset erimielisyydet jäivät selvittämättä, ja epäsopu jäi kytemään muodostuneiden kansanryhmien välille.
Then Yahweh's forces scared the people into dispersing in different directions, and the mutual differences remained unresolved, and discord remained smoldering between the people groups formed in the dispersion.
👉 Yhtenäisestä ihmisjoukosta tuli näin toisiaan vastaan kilpailevia ja sotivia kansoja. Juuri sitä sodan ja taistelun jumala, Jahve, haluaakin.
A united group of people thus became nations competing and warring against each other. That is exactly what the god of war and battle, Yahweh, wants.
❤️ Mutta Isämme taivaassa on voimallinen yhdistämään eri kieliä puhuvat ja eri tavoin ajattelevat ihmiset takaisin yhdeksi kansaksi. Se tapahtuu Hänen Pojassaan, elävässä Sanassa.
But our Father in heaven is powerful to unite people who speak different languages and think differently into one nation. It takes place in His Son, the living Word.
❤️ Uuden Testamentin suomen kielelle kääntänyt Mikael Agricola on kirjoittanut: ”Kyllä se kuulee suomen kielen, joka ymmärtää kaikkein mielen” (Rukouskirja 1544).
Mikael Agricola, who translated the New Testament into Finnish, wrote: ”Truly He hears the Finnish language, who understands the mind of all" (Prayer Book 1544).
