Minua on kiusannut jo useita vuosia kysymys, miksi heprean kielessä sanoilla בעל ja אדון näyttäisi olevan sama merkitys. En ole kuitenkaan vaivautunut tutkimaan asiaa sanakirjan avulla, ennen kuin törmäsin aiheeseen internetissä.
For several years, I have been tormented by the question of why the Hebrew words בעל and אדון seem to have the same meaning. However, I haven't bothered to look it up in a dictionary until I came across the topic on the internet.
Hepreassa verbien merkitys on hyvin keskeinen asia. Vanhan Testamentin yli 23000 jakeessa on lähes 72000 verbiä, siis noin kolme verbiä per jae. Yleensä jokaisen sanan kohdalla etsitään vastaavaa verbiä, joka löytyy ns. juurikirjainten avulla.
In Hebrew, the meaning of verbs is very important. In the more than 23,000 verses of the Old Testament, there are almost 72,000 verbs, that is, about three verbs per verse. Usually, for each word, we look for a corresponding verb, which can be found in using the root letters.
Sanoissa בעל ja אדון ei näytä olevan samoja kirjaimia, ja jälkimmäiselle sanalle ei löydy vastaavaa verbiä. Mutta niiden merkitystä voidaan tarkastella vertaamalla niitä muihin samantapaisiin sanoihin.
The words בעל and אדון do not seem to have the same letters, and no equivalent verb can be found for the latter word. But their meaning can be examined by comparing them with other similar words.
Molemmat sanat käännetään suomeksi sanalla ’herra’. Nyt on aika ottaa selvää näiden sanojen luonteesta ja eroista.
Both words are translated into Finnish with the word ’herra’ (’lord' in English). Now is the time to find out about the nature and differences of these words.
בעל (baal):
** verbi בעל merkitsee - omistaa, ottaa vaimoksi, yhtyä naiseen
** בעל (bal/baal) tarkoittaa herraa, isäntää, omistajaa, hallitsijaa, valtiasta, ruhtinasta...
... eli herraa, jonka valta perustuu vaimon ottamiseen ja omistamiseen
** בעלה (balaa) tarkoittaa aviovaimoa, emäntää
** בעלות (baloth) merkitsee omistusta, omistusoikeutta
** בעלים (bealim) merkitsee omistajaa, juridista henkilöä
** בעל (Baal) on Raamatussa esiintyvän kanaanilaisen jumalan tuttu nimi
===> baal-sanan kohdalla herraus perustuu omistukseen
בעל (bal):
** the verb בעל means - to own, take as a wife, unite with a woman
** בעל (bal) means lord, master, owner, ruler, prince...
... that is, a lord whose power is based on taking and owning a wife
** בעלה (bala) means married wife, mistress
** בעלות (baloth) means ownership, right of ownership
** בעלים (bealim) means owner, legal entity
** בעל (Bael) is the familiar name of a Canaanite god appearing in the Bible
===> in the case of the word baal, lordship is based on ownership
אדון (adon) ja אדני (adonai):
** vastaavaa verbiä ei ole olemassa, sen sijaan on kaksi sanaa, joissa on samoja kirjaimia, ja ne antavat tietoa siitä, millainen ’herra' on kysymyksessä
SANA I: sanassa אדן (eden) on kolme samaa kirjainta kuin sanassa אדני/אדון
MUTTA älä sekoita tätä sanaa Eedenin puutarhaa merkitsevään sanaan עדן, joka kirjoitetaan eri tavalla.
Sana אדן (eden) merkitsee perustaa, jalustaa; esim. אדן חלון (eden challon) = ikkunalauta
** Tämä sana esiintyy Vanhassa Testamentissa 57 kertaa, joista suurin osa (39 kertaa) esiintyy Exoduksessa luvuissa (26., 27., 35., 36., 38., 39., 40), joissa annetaan ohjeita Ilmestysmajan rakenteista, ja se on käännetty suomeksi sanalla ’jalusta’. Esim. Ex. 26: 19:ssa kehoitetaan asettamaan 20 lautaa 40 jalustaa, siis kaksi jalustaa yhtä lautaa kohden.
** L.L. 5: 15:ssa Neito vertaa rakastettunsa jalkoja kultajalustalle pystytettyihin marmoripylväisiin.
** Job 38: 6:ssa Jumala kysyy Jobilta, mihin laskettiin maan peruspylväät/perustukset (hepreassa אדן eden). Samassa jakeessa esiintyvät myös sanat אבן פנתה (even pinnatah) eli ’kulmakivi’, joka tunnetaan Raamatussa Jeshuan symbolina (Ps. 118: 22; Jes. 28: 16; Matt. 21: 42; Ef. 2: 20; 1. Piet. 2: 6)
SANA II, jossa esiintyy samoja kirjaimia kuin adon/adonai-sanoissa, on דין
** verbi דין (din) merkitsee ’ajaa oikeudessa jonkun asiaa, hankkia oikeutta, käydä oikeutta, käräjöidä
** subst. דין (din) merkitsee oikeusjuttua, oikeudenkäyntiä, tuomiota, rangaistusta, riitaa
** subst. דין (din) tarkoittaa myös tuomaria
===> Edellä esitettyjen merkitysten pohjalta voimme ymmärtää, että Adon/Adonai tarkoittaa auktoriteettia, joka on itse perusta/jalusta yksilölle tai yhteisölle, joka sitoo asiat yhteen ja luo vankan pohjan.
אדון (adon) and אדני (adonai):
** there is no corresponding verb, instead there are two words with the same letters that give information about what kind of ’lord' is in question
WORD I: the word אדן (eden) has the same three letters as the word אדני/אדון
BUT don’t confuse this word with the word עדן meaning the Garden of Eden, which is spelled differently.
The word אדן (eden) means a foundation, a footing; For example: אדן שלון (eden challon) = window sill
** This word appears in the Old Testament 57 times, most of which (39 times) appear in Exodus in the chapters (26., 27., 35., 36., 38., 39., 40) where instructions are given about the structures of the Tabernacle, and it is translated into Finnish as the word ’jalusta’ (’socket’ in English). For example: in Ex. 26: 19 it is told to place 20 boards with 40 stands/sockets, that is, two stands/sockets per one board.
** In Song of Solomon 5: 15, the Virgin compares the feet of her beloved to marble pillars set up on golden sockets.
** In Job 38:6, God asks Job where the foundations (in Hebrew אדן eden) of the earth were laid. The same verse also contains the words אבן פנתה (even pinnatah) or 'cornerstone', which is known in the Bible as a symbol of Yeshua (Ps. 118: 22; Isa. 28: 16; Matt. 21: 42; Eph. 2: 20; 1. Pet. 2:6)
WORD II with the same letters as adon/adonai is דין
** the verb דין (din) means 'to plead someone's case in court, to obtain justice, to hold court, to court
** subst. דין (din) means A) lawsuit, trial, judgment, punishment, dispute
** subst. דין (din) also means judge
===> Based on the meanings presented above, we can understand that Adon/Adonai means authority, which is itself the basis/stand for an individual or a community, which ties things together and creates a solid foundation.
Millä sanalla heprean אדני/אדון tulisi kääntää suomeksi? Vastaus riippuu siitä, mitä suomalainen sana ’herra’ alunperin merkitsee.
Nykysuomen etymologinen sanakirja (Kaisa Häkkinen) antaa seuraavanlaisen vastauksen:
”Alun perin ylhäistä mieshenkilöä merkitsevä herra on lainaa muinaisruotsin sanasta herra tai haerra. Sama sana on lainattu myös useampiin lähisukukieliin joko suoraan ruotsista, alasaksasta tai suomen kautta. Suomen vanhassa kirjakielessä herra on esiintynyt Agricolasta ja samanaikaisista käsikirjoituksista alkaen sekä merkityksessä ’valtias, isäntä’ että ’ Jumala, Kristus’. Sanaa on vanhastaan käytetty myös yhteiskunnan yläluokkaan kuuluvien ja muidenkin sivistyneiden mieshenkilöiden nimityksenä.”
Mainittakoon vielä, että suomalainen sana ’perusta' on johdettu sanasta ’perä’.
With which word should the Hebrew אדני/אדון be translated into Finnish? The answer depends on what the Finnish word 'herra' originally means.
The Etymological Dictionary of Modern Finland (Kaisa Häkkinen) gives the following answer:
Herra, originally meaning a noble male person, is a loan from the ancient Swedish word herra or haerra. The same word has also been borrowed into several closely related languages either directly from Swedish, Low German or via Finnish. In the old literary language of Finland, herra has appeared from Agricola and contemporary manuscripts in the sense of both 'lord, master' and 'God, Christ'. The word has long been used also as a name for men belonging to the upper class of society and other civilised men.
It should also be mentioned that the Finnish word ’perusta’ (’foundation') is derived from the word ’perä’ ('stern’).
Suomennokset ’Herra’ ja ’HERRA’ ovat siis sekoittaneet puurot ja vellit pahasti keskenään. Ensin heprean אדני/אדון -sanat on käännetty sanalla ’Herra’, joka vastaa lähinnä heprean sanaa בעל baal, ja sitten soppaa on hämmennetty lisää kääntämällä tetragrammi יהוה sanalla ’HERRA’! Tetragrammi ei liity mitenkään avainsanaan אדן eden!
Therefore there is a huge confusion with the Finnish translations 'Herra' and 'HERRA' . First, the Hebrew words אדני/אדון have been translated with the word 'Herra’ ('Lord’), which is the closest equivalent to the Hebrew word בעל bal, and then the Tetragrammaton יהוה has been translated with the word ’HERRA’ (’LORD’)! The Tetragrammaton has nothing to do with the keyword אדן eden!
Mainittakoon myös, että kreikan sana ’Kyrios', josta Uuden Testamentin Herra-sanat on käännetty, merkitsee auktoriteettia, johon ei liity ajatusta perustasta/jalustasta.
It should also be mentioned that the Greek word ’Kyrios', from which the Herra-words in the New Testament are translated, means authority, which does not involve the idea of a foundation/pedestal.
Jeshua: ”Te tiedätte, että kansojen ruhtinaat herroina niitä hallitsevat, ja että mahtavat käyttävät valtaansa niitä kohtaan. Näin älköön olko teillä keskenänne, vaan joka teidän keskuudessanne tahtoo suureksi tulla, se olkoon teidän palvelijanne, ja joka teidän keskuudessanne tahtoo olla ensimmäinen, se olkoon teidän orjanne; niinkuin ei Ihmisen Poikakaan tullut palveltavaksi, vaan palvelemaan ja antamaan henkensä lunnaiksi monen edestä.” (Matt. 20: 25 - 28)
Yeshua: ”Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20: 25 - 28)
===> Isä on Jumalan valtakunnan jalusta ja Jeshua on sen kulmakivi! Suomen kielestä puuttuu oikea ilmaus Hänelle, joka laski Maan perustukset ja antoi henkensä sen asukkaiden edestä, mutta joka istuu joko korkeimmalla valtaistuimella (Isä) tai Isän oikealla puolella Taivaissa, ja jolla on tuomarin oikeus Maan asukkaiden yli.
Sana אדנות adnut, joka myös on johdettu sanasta אדן, eden, merkitsee ’hallintaa’ ja ’hallintoa’. Jumalan valtakunnan hallinta/hallinto kuuluu Isälle ja Pojalle. Siinä on kuin kaksi jalustaa tukemassa kutakin lautaa Jumalan Ilmestysmajassa (Ex. 26: 19).
===> The Father is the foundation/socket of God's kingdom and the Son is its cornerstone! The Finnish language lacks the correct expression for Him who laid the foundations/sockets of the Earth and gave His life for its inhabitants, but who sits either on the highest throne (the Father) or at the right hand of the Father (the Son) in Heaven, and has the right of judge over the inhabitants of the Earth.
The word אדנות adnut, also derived from אדן, eden, means ’administration'. The control/administration of God's kingdom belongs to the Father and the Son. It reminds two pedestals/sockets supporting each board in God's Tabernacle (Ex. 26: 19).
